Are blog comments suitable as a backlink source?

At the beginning of an off-page SEO strategy, many newcomers to link building start by commenting on blogs. Along with entries in web catalogs and directories and participation in many forums.

These backlink sources are usually right at the front because they are easy links to acquire. But how to comment on really useful backlinks? Just comment on a post and use a keyword as the name? Or is it better to use no keyword?

Does the blog have to be on topic and relevant to my area or does it not matter? Should you try to put a backlink in the comment? Should you be careful to only use do-follow or nofollow blogs? I want to get to the bottom of these questions here.

Do these easy backlinks from comments even make sense?

In general, these backlinks, such as blog comments or web catalogs, are not as valuable as a naturally occurring backlink. By that, I mean a link created for superior content.

But especially with forums and blog comments, it is possible to gain backlinks through comments, of course. And for starters, these are partly useful. Because in the beginning, you have no links, and hardly any visitors and so you are not naturally linked.

The aim of commenting should therefore be to persuade the reader of the comment (i.e. the blogger and his readership) to visit your linked page, find it great and helpful, and discover your site and what you have to offer.

In the long run, this may lead to them sharing the post, liking it, following you on all social networks and linking to a post in their own blog post (and thus generating these good and valuable links).

Are blog comments still good backlinks today?

As said above, the goal of a blog comment should not be the backlink. The goal must be the conversation with the reader and operator of a blog – and with other people. You can actually create links to sites that you share in blogs. So no link under the name is used for this, but actually only in the comment itself.

You can also use (if links are allowed) a URL shortener. You can quickly see how many people click on the link in the statistics. Of course, this can also be done with Google Analytics, but it’s much better that way when you’re on the go. A link via a short URL service also doesn’t look as spammy..

Blog comments: How to comment on blogs today

SEOs used to wander through blogs in search of backlink sources (hoping to find do follow blogs) and linked as much as they could. The most important thing was the link, regardless of relevance. Sometimes the linked content was even so bad that the link was almost embarrassing. Today there are a few things to watch out for:

  • Your linked content is above average and relevant
  • The backlink is a nofollow link
  • You would also like to link to such a page
  • The added value for the reader is given, the bounce rate must remain low
  • If you clicked on the link, you would be extremely satisfied with the site and the content

How important are comments?

Comments are one of the user-generated content that has been part of the Internet since Web 2.0. Positive effects were often attributed to the user-generated content, but there were also critical voices, which is not unreasonable given the trash that can be found on the Internet.

Especially in blogs, but also on other websites, comments play an important role, even if their importance has decreased a little due to the rise of social networks.

Many blog and website operators, therefore, ask themselves whether comments should be allowed or not.

Of course, many SEOs are interested in the influence of comments on search engine optimization (SEO). Google’s Gary Illyes tweeted: “I think it could be a sign of a strong community.”

According to him, comments can be a sign of a strong community, so it’s definitely a positive signal for the website, even if it doesn’t generate any direct “link juice”.

However, the question arises as to whether every comment is suitable for this. And then it says quite clearly that it is about high-quality comments. Spam links and comments that are too short tend to have a negative effect.

According to experts, good comments are also a sign of E-A-T, as the abbreviation in the Google Quality Rating Guidelines is called. This translates to “expertise, authority, and trustworthiness”. Anyone who receives a lot of high-quality comments has obviously published high-quality content.

Comments and SEO

Especially in relation to SEO, comments have another effect. This user-generated content provides more content so that the overall text volume of an article increases. And as we know from the holistic content, a lot of text tends to be positive.

In any case, analyses show a correlation between the text length and the positions in the search results. It is difficult to say how strong the causality is.

According to John Mueller who also works at Google, Google not only analyzes the comments but sees them as part of the content. Accordingly, these can have an effect on the ranking.

The content of the comments can generate further relevance and new keywords can be added, for which additional rankings may then arise.

Another interesting case study report also shows that removing all comments from a blog had a negative impact on rankings and thus traffic. After the comments were restored, traffic went back up.

Comments, therefore, have a certain influence on rankings and traffic. However, one must ensure that the comments are good and of high quality. Quality over quantity here.

As a blog and website owner, one should ensure that the quality of the comments are high. You can do this by moderating the comments, whether this is done by actively activating them or by deleting spam afterward. You should be very careful, especially with comments that contain links.

Only relevant comments that contribute something to the topic should be activated. Comments should be seen as part of the article and be critical accordingly.

But is that censorship? Delete comments if they don’t fit into your SEO strategi? It’s a tricky subject, but you own the site after all.

Conclusion on comment backlinks

Blog comments, or rather backlinks from blog comments are part of a natural link profile. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a link or the name of the commenter or the comment itself. Follow or no-follow, it’s somehow part of it.

Even if the Google guidelines say: Backlinks from blog comments should be no-follow links, this is a hint to the blog operator, not to the commenter. However, it is no longer appropriate to wander through blogs and spread links just to get a backlink. Also, checking to see if you’ve found a do-follow blog is a bit old-fashioned.

But if you notice that you read a lot in a blog and you keep coming back, then you can share links. Especially if you have written something really good and relevant on the subject – not just spam.
