Backlinks
Backlinks, i.e. links that lead to your own website, are relatively easy to acquire. Whether in forums, blogs, or on special link exchange sites – there is a large selection of virtual places on the Internet from which backlinks can be placed on your own website. That was and is one of the strongest arguments for backlinks: they are a fairly simple method of off-page optimization.
But since the Penguin update, even backlink advocates have recognized the need to make a distinction between “good” and “bad” backlinks. The latter are penalized by Google. Bad backlinks are primarily unnatural links, i.e. links that are set solely for marketing purposes or as advertising. Link exchange sites are therefore now also unpopular with the pro-backlinks faction and are expressly not recommended.
However, experts still consider good backlinks to be important in order to get to the top of search engine results pages.
Good backlinks are links that are placed within high-quality content and at least seem natural. High-quality content can be a blog entry or article that is relevant to the linked website, but also a corresponding forum. In the best case, you combine Google’s content quality standards with natural link building. At least in theory, this view seems conclusive.
Backlinks from good content
It is undisputed that nowadays the quality of a website is in the foreground in terms of SEO success and not solely the number of backlinks. So if you only rely on backlinks and obviously unnatural backlinks for off-page optimization, you won’t get far and may face a penalty from Google.
But even if Google doesn’t openly admit it, backlinks continue to play a major role in search engine optimization. The top websites are no longer characterized by a high number of backlinks, but by those that are naturally generated in combination with high-quality content and placed on well-rated websites.
This trend is also confirmed by more recent figures: in 2015, the top 30 websites again showed a certain upward trend in terms of backlinks. The simple setting of backlinks may no longer be up-to-date. However, high-quality backlinks are still a powerful tool for search engine optimization. As a rule of thumb, whenever you want a link to your site from another site, think about whether it would be the same if Google didn’t exist. If so, then it’s usually a good link.
What is a backlink and why are they important?
A backlink is a link that leads from another website to your own website.
In search engines, the number of backlinks to a website is used as an indication of the popularity or, in other words, the importance or relevance of a website.
Important: Backlinks can have a different quality and therefore strength. The more popular or important the website on which a backlink can be placed, the more positive the effect of the backlink is typically.
In the past, the (external) Google PageRank of the website on which the backlink was placed, which Google provided to the public, could help to assess the quality of a backlink. The rule was: the better the PageRank of the referring page, the better. Unfortunately, this publicly available PageRank of a website can no longer be used as a benchmark today.
Because in October 2014, when asked by a user about link sales, Google employee John Mueller explained: “There are a few things where we do take action that you might not see directly. On one hand, PageRank is something that we have not updated for a year now, and we’re probably not going to be updating it going forward, at least in the Toolbar”.
However, John Müller’s statement also shows that the PageRank of websites calculated internally by Google for its own purposes will continue to play an important role in the evaluation of backlinks. A little more difficult – from the point of view of a website owner – is the task of recognizing what are good backlinks and what is not.
Link building
There are many websites on the Internet that deal with the question of how backlinks can be built up systematically and continuously. This is also referred to as link building.
Link building can be done in several ways, with typically three basic approaches: (1) buying backlinks, (2) exchanging backlinks, and (3) manually entering backlinks, for example, in public web catalogs or forums.
(1) To buy backlinks: There are many service providers who have specialized in the commercial business with backlinks (i.e. selling them). In return for payment, it is promised to generate several hundred or even thousand backlinks in a very short time, i.e. to place them on other websites.
(2) To exchange backlinks: The targeted exchange of backlinks with other websites is also possible as a method of link building. However, the following applies here: quality before quantity! In other words, it’s better to exchange fewer backlinks with consistently good websites, i.e. don’t simply exchange them with any website. In addition, care should be taken to ensure that the websites that exchange backlinks are also related thematically. A frequently used approach is the exchange of links via blog articles.
(3) Manual entry of backlinks: Of course, you can always sit down and enter your own website in public directories, web catalogs or forums wherever possible. In any case, pay attention to the quality when setting backlinks.
Why are backlinks important for SEO?
Backlinks are a measure of off-page optimization and therefore an important part of search engine optimization (SEO). Link building is a long-term undertaking, but worth every effort: Because this is the only way you can remain competitive on Google, stand out from the rest of the competition, and rise in the ranking of the SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages)
At least since the Google Penguin Update 2012, valuable links and backlinks have become more important. Google evaluates links from websites and accordingly places high-quality websites with relevant content in the search results. The more high-quality backlinks a website has, the more relevant it appears to Google and the greater the positive impact on the ranking or placement in the SERPs.
This means that the search engines evaluate the backlink as a recommendation when indexing the website. The more backlinks, i.e. the more recommendations a website has, the more helpful, relevant, and interesting the content of this page is and the higher the probability that the page will rank for relevant keywords in the search results of Google, for example.
An additional benefit of link building for SEO comes from the fact that when you get backlinks from popular, relevant, and popular pages, Google will discover your content faster and rank it higher because search engines like Google visit those pages more often.
For SEO it is particularly important that the link-building occurs naturally and that the links are of high quality. We will show you what makes a high-quality backlink.
Which websites are suitable for links?
It’s not about getting as many backlinks as possible, it’s about gaining lots of quality and qualified backlinks. It is important to distinguish high-quality links from dubious links, to find strong sites for linking, to practice natural link building, and to devalue harmful links.
Which domains are suitable? To find out, it makes sense to measure the traffic of the site and look at the visibility index, for example. Use the right tools and answer the following questions:
- Does the course of the visibility look like a natural growth?
- Is the course relatively constant without dropping sharply?
- Does the site have relevant traffic?
- Has the site recently been penalized as part of Google Updates?
For example, tools such as Sistrix, Ahrefs, or Similarweb are available for this information. It is best to look at several values and tools for a comprehensive assessment. The thematic relevance of the page is also particularly important.
Does the page fit into your link profile or is it completely different in terms of content and topic and therefore looks unnatural?
For SEO it is particularly important that the link-building occurs naturally and that the links are of high quality. We will show you what makes a high-quality backlink.
