- when searching locally with a desktop PC, more than 1/3 of those searching have already found all the information they were looking for directly in the search results and have not clicked any further.
- when searching for local information with a mobile device, over 60% of searchers found all the information in the search results / Google My Business and successfully completed their search.
This shows that a large part of the information is already found directly in the search engines.
What does this mean for local businesses?
The most important thing is a well-maintained entry in Google My Business (and thus also in Google Maps).
Since Bing also has a certain market share, it is worth making an entry there.
Local businesses can also consider an entry in Apple Maps. Apple’s card system is getting better and better and as you know, Apple doesn’t like letting its users out of the Apple ecosystem.
Do the other online directories bring no advantages at all?
One point that speaks for more entries in local business directories, however, is improved rankings in Google. You are now asking yourself: Why is that?
Google incorporates many factors into its algorithm. Among other things, this also includes how often your own website is linked to, from other sites.
For small companies in competitive industries, it can therefore make sense to provide up-to-date and correct information about their own company in other local directories online.
Depending on the industry, different online directories make sense, based on their industry but also whether or not it is a local company.
So, are local directories important for search engine optimization (SEO)?
A regular study by SEO experts from MOZ on local ranking factors found that local directories were becoming less relevant for search engine rankings.
In the study, experts assess the extent to which online directories contribute to local SEO: While the contribution was 17 percent in 2015, the contribution in 2020 is only 7 percent.
So that every local business directory entry does not have to be maintained individually, platforms have been developed through which one can access a large number of local directories centrally. With all platforms, you pay a monthly fee to maintain your directories. Such a solution can make sense, especially for chain stores that have to manage many locations.
For small, local businesses, a well-maintained Google My Business listing is absolutely sufficient from a cost-benefit perspective.
The more competitive the industry, the sooner you should take care of other business directories.
And the more branches and locations a company has, the more likely it is that you should use more specific business directories/business listing sites.
In certain industries, there are particularly relevant business directories. Some sites may be great for some but not as relevant for others. Companies in the relevant sectors should register in these.
